Early Childhood Special Education Referral Process

Use Page 1 of the brochure to identify possible delays which may indicate a need for screening.

If you have concerns about your child's development, please follow this procedure.

  1. Call the Special Education Department for Grand Haven Area Public Schools at 850-5140. Let them know you would like to have your child screened by the Early Childhood Special Education Team.
  2. They will send out forms to you and your to your child's preschool to collect information. Complete and return these forms as soon as possible.
  3. When the Special Education Department receives these forms they will be sent to the case coordinator who will then arrange a home and/or preschool visit to observe the child.
  4. The home visit team consisting of a psychologist, social worker and speech/language pathologist will come out to he home or preschool and collect information from the child, parents, and possibly the teacher.
  5. The home visit team shares the collected information the full team of early childhood professionals and they develop a recommendation, which is then communicated to the parent.
  6. Follow up on recommendations made is initiated upon parent approval.

Additionally, a screening clinic is scheduled once yearly, usually in the spring, when you can bring your child to Mary A. White at a designated time for a screening. Please call the Special Education Office for the specific date of this clinic.
