DRESS CODE

The school laws of the State of Michigan require that students, in conjunction with their parents, dress and groom themselves in a manner that does not detract from the educational process. The final decision on the appropriateness of a student’s attire will rest with the principal or her designee. If you have questions about apparel, please ask. Students are expected to use good judgment.

CLOTHING ITEMS TO AVOID

  • Bare midriffs (if you can’t tuck it in, don’t wear it).
  • Too much throat (if you hold your neck with your right hand, placing the first finger and thumb over your collar bones, the border of the garment you are wearing has to be hidden by the bottom of your hand). Students who wear inappropriate shirts or tops will be given a t-shirt to be worn for the day. At the end of the day, the t-shirt will be returned to the office.
  • Tank tops (the straps must be a minimum of 4 fingers wide; the opening for the arms must fit snugly against the body).
  • Skorts and shorts will need to follow the finger-tip rule—the end of the fabric cannot be higher than the ends of your fingers when your arms are held at your side. If skirts are too short, wearing shorts underneath them does not make them okay to wear. Skirts still cannot be higher than three inches from the middle of your knees.
  • Shredded, torn, ripped, or tattered clothes and sagging pants (we have some rope or sweatpants in the office to help you).
  • Clothing or jewelry that shows tobacco or alcohol products, that is drug-related, or has any kind of gang symbolism.
  • Any clothing with sexually inappropriate or offensive clothing, vulgar slogans or pictures.
  • Pajamas - *Footwear must be worn at all times! (No slippers).
  • Hats (of any kind – headbands, ‘Doo Rags’, bandannas, rimmed, capped, or snug) can’t be worn in school.
  • Jackets or coats indoors.
  • Chains, dog collars, rings, necklaces, balls & chains or bracelets which could potentially hurt someone or are excessive.
  • Non-prescriptive sunglasses.

Students who dress inappropriately will be given the opportunity to change clothes rather than to be sent home from school.

GHAPS District Dress Code

The appropriateness of a student’s attire will be decided on the basis of health and safety, and whether it is disruptive to class routine. The final decision will rest with school authorities.
