Dear Parents,

This information is to give you some background information on how the Athletic Program is run at Grand Haven. Hopefully it will answer many of the questions you might have regarding our sports opportunities.

Learning to win and winning are important goals, but skill development and team play where athletes can experience and learn are our primary desired outcomes.

Middle School Athletics is team work. We emphasize the need for cooperative participation between parents, coaches and athletes in meeting our goals. Every effort will be made to provide an atmosphere in which this cooperation will allow each athlete an opportunity to become the best he/she can be.

We desire that all students who show interest in these athletic programs try out or participate in them. The seasons are relatively short and help students identify where their abilities are best used. We know that most students who have not engaged in or experienced Middle School sports or who did not even try out will not venture to experience High School Athletics. Our desire is that all middle school students take advantage of the Middle School Athletic Program. There never was a winner who wasn’t first a beginner!

General Information

Attendance at Practices/Games

Students are expected to attend all team practices and games. Personal appointments should be scheduled on days or times other than those listed on the schedule. Pre-arranged absences are to be made through the coach.

Cancellation of Practice/Games

Practices and games are canceled when the National Weather Bureau has issued a tornado watch or warning, or a severe inclement weather bulletin. When school is canceled due to inclement weather, all practices and games are also canceled for that day.

Picking Students up from School After Practices/Games

Please arrange prompt rides home from school within 15 minutes after practices and games are completed. Please refer to the schedules put out by the coaches for the time you should be at school to pick up your student.

Riding to and from Away Contests on Bus

The district provides bus transportation for teams to away contests. Team members are expected to ride the bus to and from the contest. If you must take your student home with you from an away contest, then a Travel Release Form must be obtained from your coach, signed and returned to him/her before the release.

Sports Registration

Students MUST have a physical o file prior to practices or participation. They are also required to have a Code-of-Conduct form on file to participate. 6th grade participants - if space allows, 6th graders may be allowed to participate, yet not compete. 6th graders require a physical and service fee.

Physical Examination

Students must have a physical examination before they may participate or try out in athletics. The completed physical examination form is to be turned in to the office PRIOR to tryout or participation in the program. One examination is satisfactory for the school year. Forms are available from the main office. The West Michigan Sports Medicine Clinic offers physical examinations with Dr. Larry Poel. The clinic is located at 302 S. Beechtree. Please call 846-8570 to find out the dates they will be offering athletic physical exams. You may also obtain one from your family physician or at a medical center.

Insurance

Each sport that a student participates in requires a payment fee of $20 for supplemental insurance coverage.

Service Fees

$30 Fully funded sports

$10 Self-funded sports

Athletic Code and all fees must be paid prior to participation in first contest.

Academic Eligibility

Students must be passing a minimum of four classes to remain eligible to participate. We expect students to maintain good grades, attendance, and behavior in the classroom as well as on the field/court. Athletics is an extension of the classroom and we will help provide necessary support to each athlete struggling academically.
