The Buccaneers earned their runner-up finish by placing nine wrestlers, including champions Camden Bertucci at 103 and Connor Moynihan at 171.
“The guys are coming along,” Grand Haven coach James Richardson said. “I’m
pleased with how much extra time this group spends trying to get better.”
Moynihan also likes how his team is coming along.
He won the 171-pound title with a 6-2 win against Allegan’s Andrew Kelley.

every time they take the mat.

Bucs
honor Provencal; place 2nd at invite
Nate
Thompson
Division 3 powerhouse Shelby
captured the team title at Saturday’s Adam
Provencal Invitational, held at Grand Haven High
School. The host Buccaneers also didn’t
disappoint, taking runner-up honors and trailing
the champion Tigers by just three points in the
finals standings.
The Bucs had four weight
class champions — Camden Bertucci at 103 pounds;
Dakota Juarez at 152; Matt Mulcahy at 189; and
Ian Radde at heavyweight.
The tournament is held as an
annual tribute to Provencal, a former Grand
Haven soccer and wrestling standout who was
tragically killed during an accidental shooting
on Halloween night in 1992.
“This tournament was held
before that but it was just called the Big Buc,”
said Provencal’s father, Grand Haven Athletic
Director Jack Provencal. “When Adam passed, as a
labor of love they decided to re-name it in his
honor. People have been coming back for 20 years
to help out. Alumni and officials come back year
after year to make sure it runs smoothly.
“As a father, it’s very
emotional. It’s just a great tournament.
Everyone here considers each other family
because we’ve spent so much time together over
the years doing this.”
Provencal said Grand Haven
coach James Richardson makes it a point at
informing the current Buccaneer wrestlers the
type of athlete and person Adam was.
“James actually wrestled for
me at another school district, so I was very
grateful when he came back (to Grand Haven) to
coach,” Provencal said. “Clearly, he lets his
kids know about Adam. James knew Adam. He was
just a young boy then.”
The Bucs also had strong
showings from Connor Moynihan and Garrett Kelly
on Saturday, as they each placed second in their
weight class. Garret Young, Allen Torres and
Abraham Westerman placed third.
