22nd-Ranked Navy Wrestling Cruises Past Franklin & Marshall
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The No. 22-ranked Navy wrestling squad won the first four matches and cruised to a 34-12 decision over Franklin & Marshall in Navy's first EIWA dual-meet of the season. The win gives Navy a 4-0 dual-meet record for the first time since the 1987-88 season.
The meet started at 125 pounds, with Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) claiming a forfeit victory for a 6-0 Navy advantage. In a key match at 133 pounds, Sam Gray (Essex, Vt.) scored an 11-2 major-decision victory over the EIWA's 4th-ranked wrestler, Rich Gebauer, to give Navy a 10-0 cushion. The lead swelled to 21-0 when 141-pounder Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio) improved to 12-2 on the season with a pin over Aviel Ayoung in 2:52 and John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) scored a technical fall over Andrew Smith.
The Diplomats cut into the lead, winning the next three matches, to trim the margin to 21-12 after the 174-pound match. However, the Mids claimed a forfeit victory by Jon Kane (Portland, Maine) to push the margin to 27-12. 197-pounder Andrew Adams (Dublin, Ohio) defeated Glenn Martin by major decision, 19-5, and heavyweight Tanner Garrett (Tulsa, Okla.) scored a 10-5 decision over Shawn Coughlin to give Navy a 34-12 victory.
Navy will be off on the next two weekends for finals and the holiday break. Its next action will be at the highly-competitive Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30, in Greensboro, N.C. Teams scheduled to compete are eighth-ranked Minnesota, 11th-ranked Cornell, 19th-ranked Edinboro, 23rd-ranked Rider, The Citadel, Virginia, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. In all, 24 teams will be competing at the two-day event.

Navy Wrestling Ranked 22nd; Five Individuals Ranked
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy wrestling team fell one spot to No. 22 in the latest NWCA / Intermat national rankings released today. However, two weeks after having four individuals ranked in the Top 20, five Navy wrestlers find themselves in the top 20 individual polls.
Navy is coming off a strong performance at the competitive Penn State Open, placing 12 wrestlers in the top eight, highlighted by three second-place finishes and two third-place showings. Navy was ranked No. 21 in last week's poll after claiming the Navy Classic on Nov. 20.
This week's highest-ranked individual is 149-pound John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.). The sophomore is listed No. 13 for the second straight poll, after placing second at the Penn State Open, falling only to Virginia's Scott Moore in the finals. He sports a 14-2 record in 2004-05, and has a stellar 34-8 career record. He is 32-6 in his last 38 matches, dating back to last year.
Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio) is ranked No. 14 at 141 pounds for the second straight week with an 11-2 record. Gulosh sat out last week's Penn State Open, but is likely for this weekend's dual with Franklin & Marshall. He owns a 61-32 career record and has won six matches in a row. Gulosh is also ranked No. 9 in the latest American Wrestling News (AWN) rankings, also released today.
Sam Gray (Essex, Vt.) is in the 133-pound rankings at No. 17, the same spot he occupied last week. Gray placed fifth at the Penn State Open and has posted a 13-5 record so far this season. Two of his last five wins have been over other ranked foes. He is Navy's current career victories leader with 75. Gray is 18th in the AWN rankings.
Both 197-pounder Thayer Paxton (Meyersdale, Pa.) and heavyweight Tanner Garrett (Tulsa, Okla.) are ranked No. 19 in this week's rankings. Paxton owns a 15-2 mark after placing second at Penn State Open. Since the start of last year, Paxton owns a 43-11 record and recorded his 23rd career pin last weekend, just one shy of eighth place on Navy's career pins list.
Garrett moved up one spot after a third-place showing at the Penn State Open. He currently owns a 10-1 record, but is a perfect 10-0 against collegiate competition. Garrett owns a 46-24 career mark. Garrett holds down the No. 13 spot in the AWN rankings.
Navy is one of five EIWA teams ranked in the top 25. Lehigh, which started the season ranked No. 2, is currently sixth, Cornell is 11th, Penn is 21st and Army joins the rankings at No. 25. Navy's schedule will get considerably more difficult in the second half of the season, as the Mids battle No. 4 Nebraska and No. 10 Oklahoma in the Lone Star Duals, and take on No. 6 Lehigh in Annapolis on Jan. 15. Navy will also see stiff competition from ranked teams Minnesota, Cornell and Rider at the Southern Scuffle in late December.
Navy will be in action next on Saturday with an EIWA dual against Franklin & Marshall. Action gets underway at 2:00 p.m., in Lancaster, Pa.

Halsey Field House.
"To say that I am pleased
would be a bit of an
understatement," said Navy
head coach Bruce Burnett.
"It's nice to win the team
title, bit its always nice
to win at home. Five
individual titles is
impressive, but I was most
pleased with the number of
place winners. It was a
great team effort, and
everyone wrestled well. Our
conditioning really paid
off. We are trying to get to
the level where we are
competitive at every meet
and get guys into the
national rankings. I think
we are starting to get
there."
Navy's Sam Gray (Essex,
Vt.), Nate Gulosh (Stow,
Ohio), John Cox (Grand
Haven, Mich.), Thayer
Paxton (Meyersdale, Pa.) and
Tanner Garrett (Tulsa,
Okla.) all claimed

claimed the title with a 9-5
victory over West Virginia's
Brandon Lauer, who was
ranked fifth in the country.

the semifinals against
Virginia Tech's Aaron Brown.
Cox continued his
impressive start to his
sophomore season with a 9-6
finals victory over North
Carolina State's Chris
Deluca. Cox was dominant
during the tournament,
recording a major decision
and a technical fall in the
first two rounds.
The Mids also dominated in
the upper-weight classes.
Paxton claimed his second
individual title in as many
tournaments at 197 with a
4-0 mark that featured two
pins and a major decision.
Paxton won the title by a
pin in the finals over
teammate Andrew Adams
(Dublin, Ohio) in 6:30. And
lastly at heavyweight,
Garrett continued his
undefeated start with a 5-2
victory over George Mason's
Joel Caruso in the title
match. Garrett also posted a
3-0 mark in the tournament.
"We still made a lot of
mistakes, but we did a lot
of things right today," said
Burnett. "We just competed
well and were very
competitive."
Other high placewinners
include 125-pounder Brad
Canterbury (3rd; Blue Bell,
Pa.), 149-pounder Matt
Gulosh (3rd; Stow, Ohio),

John Cox and the Mids host
the Navy Classic this Saturday at Halsey
Field House. |
ANNAPOLIS, Md. --
The Navy wrestling team opens its home season this
weekend with the Navy Classic on Saturday. Navy
expects to be one of the favorites to take home the
team title. Nine teams will compete including
national powers West Virginia, Rutgers, Virginia
Tech and North Carolina State.
"First of all, it's great to be back home," said
Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. The Mids opened the
season on Nov. 6, at the Eastern Michigan Open and
swept three duals last weekend in California. "The
kids are excited to be home and hopefully we can
wrestle well this weekend. We have some injuries,
but have good depth this year where we can plug
someone into the lineup and shouldn't miss a beat.
This is a great opportunity to wrestle strong
opponents and test ourselves against the best."
West Virginia figures to be the team to beat, but
are only bringing 11 wrestlers. However, included in
that mix, are nationally-ranked 141-pounder Brandon
Lauer, 157-pounder Zach Fryling and 2004 NCAA
Tournament qualifier, 133-pounder Seth Lisa. The
Moutaineers are ranked anywhere from 10th to 15th in
the four national polls. Other strong opposition
comes from Rutgers' 174-pounder Andrew Roy, who is
ranked seventh in the country and a pair of Virginia
Tech grapplers, heavyweight Michael Faust (seventh
in NCAA) and 133-pounder David Hoffman (16th in NCAA).
Navy, meanwhile, will wrestle 33 participants
including four at 125, 133, 165 and 184 pounds. The
Midshipmen placed third last season and had 14
wrestlers place in the top five, but claimed no
individual titles. Navy's best chances come at four
weight classes. Senior Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio) is a
threat at 141 pounds, where he has posted an 8-2
record including a 5-4 win over 11th-ranked Steve
Esparza of Cal Poly last weekend. Sophomore John
Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) is 7-1 at 149 pounds,
including a second-place finish at the
season-opening Eastern Michigan Open. At 197 pounds,
senior Thayer Paxton (Meyersdale, Pa.) is 7-1
overall and claimed the individual title at the EMU
Open. And at heavyweight, junior Tanner Garrett
(Tulsa, Okla.) is 3-0, winning all three duals last
weekend by at least seven points.
"Our goal is to get a little bit better every day
and stay steady," said Burnett. "We need to locate
the weak areas and turn them into strengths. We will
also get a chance to see a lot of wrestlers this
weekend and see how well they perform. There is no
way to predict who will be our top wrestlers heading
into EIWA's later this year, so we need to go out
and perform the best we can every time out."
Action will get underway at Halsey Field House at
9:00 a.m. Finals are slated to start at 5:30 p.m.,
and competition will run all day. It will be the
last home action for Navy until a dual meet with
Lehigh on Jan. 15.

Three Navy Wrestlers Earn NCAA Bids
Philadelphia, Pa. -- Three Navy wrestlers earned bids to the NCAA Tournament as the Mids competed at the 2004 EIWA Championships at the Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. After a rough morning, where three Navy wrestlers fell in the semifinals and three more were eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals, the Midshipmen continued to fight and ended the day with Tanner Garrett (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall), Michael Barikian (Stratford, N.J./Sterling Regional) and Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) each earning a bid to the 2004 NCAA Championships.
“We showed a lot of improvement,” noted head coach Bruce Burnett after the tournament. “We made some mistakes, but we competed hard every time we took the mat. We have three qualifiers to the NCAA Tournament that we need to get ready.
“There were a lot of ups and downs -- Tanner Garrett lost 4-1 to the No. 2 guy in the country. Thayer Paxton, Nate Gulosh and Mike Barikian all wrestled well. We just want to win.”
Garrett earned a 3-2 victory over East Stroudsburg's Stanley Foster in the semifinals to advance to the championship bout at heavyweight, automatically qualifying him for the NCAA tournament. Garrett dropped a 4-1 decision to defending EIWA heavyweight champion and top-seeded Matt Feast (Penn) in the title bout.
Barikian, Navy's team captain, faced Army's Kurt Pryor in the third-place bout and the chance to automatically qualify for nationals. The two had faced each other twice this season, with Pryor winning a 4-3 decision on Feb. 21 in the final dual meet of the season and Barikian tallying a 9-6 win in the quarterfinals yesterday. Today, Barikian jumped out to the lead and held a 6-0 advantage with a takedown and two-point near fall in the first period and a reversal in the second. Barikian closed out the bout with a 7-1 victory to earn third place.
Gulosh faced top-seeded Cory Cooperman (Lehigh) in the semifinals and was pinned at 3:19. Gulosh recovered quickly, though and pinned Princeton's Milo Adams in just over two minutes. Gulosh then faced the second-seeded Max Meltzer of Harvard and wrestled to a tough 3-1 loss. With his only two losses coming against the top-two seeds, Gulosh was awarded a wildcard by the conference coaches.
Junior Thayer Paxton (Meyersdale, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) finished in fourth place at 197 pounds after top-seeded Matt Greenberg (Cornell) edged him 3-2 in the semifinals, then defeating Jake Butler (Princeton) 6-2, and dropping a hard-fought 7-4 decision to Reggie Lee (Harvard).
Freshman John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) took fifth place in the 149-pound weight class in his first EIWA appearance. Cox posted a 9-3 victory over Erik Norgaard (Columbia) after trailing 3-0 early in the second period. Cox then dropped a 14-4 bout to Dustin Manotti (Cornell), the second-seeded wrestler at149 pounds. Cox ended the day with a 3-2 victory over Greg Austin (Rutgers), earning the third point on riding time after holding Austin down for the entire third period.
Navytook sixth place at the 2004 EIWA Championship with 66 points. Lehigh finished in first place, Penn in second and Cornell in third. Army finished in fifth place with 67 points. For complete tournament results and final brackets, please refer to Penn Athletics.
Garrett, Barikian and Gulosh will head to St. Louis, Mo. for the NCAA Championships on March 18-20. Tickets are available by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY.

Wrestling Captures N-Star With 22-9 Victory Over Army
Annapolis, Md. -- In front of 1,138 fans in Alumni Hall tonight, Navy wrestling (12-4, 5-1 EIWA) closed out the 2003-04 regular season with a 22-9 victory over Army to win the N-Star for the fourth-straight year. Junior Pat Lukanich (LaGrange, Ill./St. Ignatius) secured the Mids' win as he upset the seventh-ranked wrestler in the country at 157 pounds with a 6-5 decision over Army's Phillip Simpson. Lukanich put Navy ahead, 19-6, with only two bouts to go as he picked up his tenth victory of the season.
“From top to bottom, I'm really proud of our team,” noted head coach Bruce Burnett. “I was feeling good about everything we did in practice all week. We had a great turnout tonight with a lot of alumni, but a lot of people missed some great wrestling.”
Sophomore Chris Pogue (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) started the night, taking a 7-6 decision from Matt Bernard at 184 pounds. Heading into the third period, the bout was scoreless but Bernard carried in a two minute riding time advantage. Bernard struck first, with an escape, but Pogue added two takedowns for the lead. With 44 seconds left in the match, Bernard scored his first takedown of the match and took a 5-4 lead. Pogue tied the score at 5-5 with 26 seconds left, but was still down a point with riding time. With only five seconds left, Pogue recorded his third takedown for the 7-5 advantage and victory.
Army's Luke Calvert, ranked 20th in the nation at 184 pounds, moved up a weight class to 197 and posted an 11-8 victory over the Mids' win-leader, junior Thayer Paxton (Meyersdale, Pa./Berlin Brothers Valley). Paxton challenged in the last minute and got within two points, but Calvert scored the decision to tie the match at 3-3.
At heavyweight, sophomore Tanner Garrett (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) picked up his tenth dual win of the season with a 14-5 victory over Bo Reynolds. Garrett held a 6-3 lead heading into the third period, but added three takedowns in the final two minutes to score the major decision for the Mids. Junior Sam Gray (Essex, Vt./Essex) took the mat against Andy Henry and allowed the Black Knight only one point, as he posted a 7-1 decision.
Army scored its second victory at 133 pounds, as Bernard Gardner tallied an 8-2 decision over freshman Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), but junior Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) put the momentum back on Navy's side with an 8-3 win over Patrick Simpson at 141 pounds.
At 149 pounds, freshman John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) found himself trailing Anthony Dunkin 8-3 at the start of the third period, but he posted two takedowns in the first 1:10 to get within two points at 9-7. With 50 seconds left, Cox gave up the escape point but with 29 seconds remaining, he scored a takedown to get within one. Cox took Dunkin on his back and was awarded the three point near fall as time expired to earn the 12-10 decision.
Cox's victory put the Mids up 16-6 with three matches to go and Army's top wrestler about to take the mat. Phillip Simpson, with 99 career wins, defeated Lukanich 6-2 on Jan. 31 at the All-Academy Championships, but he would not earn his 100th victory in Annapolis. Simpson took the early lead with a 3-2 advantage in the first period, and then added an escape point in the second period. With 1:40 left in the bout, Lukanich scored an escape to get with one and 19 seconds later scored a takedown for the 5-4 lead, but with just over one minute to go, Simpson scored the escape to tie the bout at 5-5. Lukanich, however, was holding 1:10 of riding time and the time expired with neither wrestler scoring another point and Lukanich taking the 6-5 victory.
“You don't go in to any match thinking you're supposed to lose,” commented Lukanich on his upset victory over Simpson. “I lost to him three weeks ago, but I trained for this all week and I had a good idea about what he did and what to expect.”
Army's Kurt Pryor recorded a 4-3 decision over Michael Barikian (Stratford, N.J./Sterling Regional) at 165 pounds, but the Mids closed out the meet with local wrestler Andrew Hemminger (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) capping his senior season with a 4-2 victory over Connor Sanders at 174 pounds.
Five of tonight's matches were decided by two points or less, and both Lukanich and Cox were awarded their final points with no time remaining in their bouts. “What's unique about this sport is that you're never out of it,” added Burnett. “It only takes one second to turn it all around.”
Burnett is now 4-0 against Army in dual competition and the Mids own a 38-5-5 all-time advantage over th Black Knights.
The Mids finish the regular season with a 12-4 record and a 5-1 mark in the conference. Navy will head to the 100th Annual EIWA Championships on Mar. 6-7, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Army vs. Navy: Rivalry Adds Another Chapter This Weekend
2/19/2004 10:55:00 PM
Navy Has Won Last Three Duals But This Could Be The Year For Army; Match Will Be Updated Live By The Wrestling Mall
By Ryan Dunn and Matt Krumrie
Please send comments, questions or replies to: info@thewrestlingmall.com
There is no bigger rivalry among military-based athletic teams than Army versus Navy. The two service academies and Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) rivals will wrestle their annual dual meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md.
The Naval Academy defeated conference foe Franklin & Marshall last weekend, 35-6 and now stands at 11-4 this year and is 4-1 in the EIWA. The team has won eight of its last nine dual meets and took first place at the All-Academy Championships on January 31st over a field of ten teams which included Army.
Navy head coach Bruce Burnett is in his fourth season leading the Midshipmen and sports a perfect 3-0 record against Army. He is well aware of the importance of the meet.
“It’s a big rivalry anytime you get the military academies together,” Burnett said.
He also mentioned that he just received an email from a former Navy wrestler stationed in Afghanistan who sent a picture of himself holding a sign which read “Beat Army.”
The Army wrestling team, which has won five of its last six matches, will attempt to end Navy's three-match win streak in the final dual match of the season for both squads.
"It is a big match for us," said Army head coach Chuck Barbee. "We are excited to be involved with such a great rivalry. Everyone will wrestle his heart out.”
The Black Knights (7-6), who haven't won in Annapolis since a 15-14 victory in 1961, will attempt to put an end to that streak this season. The last time they defeated the Mids, who bring an 11-4 record into the match, was 1997 at Christl Arena. In 2000, at Alumni Hall, the two teams tied 16-16. Navy leads the all-time series which dates to 1957, 37-5-5.
Army went 2-3 in individual matches against the Midshipmen at the All-Academy Championships last month. Phillip Simpson defeated Pat Lukanich in the finals of the 157-pound weight class, 6-2, and Bernard Gardner beat Alex Usztics for third place at 133 pounds.
Both Army and Navy enter Saturday's match unranked. The Black Knights have posted a 7-3 record against unranked foes this season. Simpson is ranked No. 8 at 157 pounds by The Wrestling Mall, while 184-pounder Luke Calvert is ranked 19th. No Midshipmen appear in The Wrestling Mall rankings.
Simpson has been Army's top wrestler all year and has gone 2-0 versus Navy wrestlers since his freshman year. The Nashville, Tenn., native will be attempting to win his 100th career match in just the 113th bout of his three-year career. Only Maurice Worthy, who reached the 100-win plateau in his 112th bout, reached that milestone faster. Simpson, who posted 37 victories each of his first two seasons, is 25-2 this year. He has won 13 consecutive matches with eight by pin. Simpson, who placed third at the NCAA Championships last year, has 11 pins this season and 42 in his career to stand second on Army's all-time list behind Dave Warnick's 58.
Calvert has a chance to improve his record to 22-5 this season. A victory Saturday would give him 40 for his career. He is currently tied with Bernard Gardner for second on the team in career victories with 39. Just a sophomore, the Broken Arrow, Okla., native has won nine of his last 10 bouts. His lone loss came to Brown's Nick Ciarcia, ranked 18th nationally at the time, by a 3-2 margin.
Gardner, who has been hot since mid-January, has compiled a 12-2 mark since a dual match with Montclair State on Jan. 18. His run mirrors last year when he compiled an 8-5 record after Feb. 1 and a 5-1 mark following the first day of March, excluding the NCAA Championships. Using his experience, Gardner is 22-9 overall with four pins, all at 133 pounds. The Kinnear, Wyo., native's nine wins in dual matches is tied with Simpson for most on the team.
The Army/Navy rivalry has also attracted the attention of former Navy pilot and current Secretary or Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, who attended the dual meet two years ago. Burnett mentioned that he was actually flown to the meet via helicopter piloted by a former Navy wrestler.
No stranger to big rivalries, Burnett served as the U.S. National Freestyle head coach for eight years before coming to Navy. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at Oklahoma State and got to experience four years of the annual “Bedlam Series” between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. It was his work with the U.S. national team that has given him a truly unique view on rivalries people might not normally think of.
“As the national coach, when you wrestle Russia or Iran, those are some big matches and you can throw the records out the door. You’ve really got to be prepared to wrestle,” he said.
However, while acknowledging the fact that this is a big dual meet, Burnett says beating Army is just another step towards building a championship caliber program. “If you want to beat the best you’ve got to beat Army,” he said. “Chuck Barbee (Army head coach) has done a good job with their program.”
The Midshipmen have been without the services of returning All-American Frank Edwards for much of the season. After finishing seventh last year at 165, big things were expected for Edwards this year as he rolled to a 6-0 record to start the season. However, he has been beset by injuries ever since, tearing his meniscus and breaking his hand. Combine those injuries with the torn ACL he suffered during the summer and his senior year hasn’t gone as hoped. But maintaining the warrior’s mentality that is essential to be a Navy wrestler, Burnett said he is working to be ready for the EIWA conference meet March 6-7 in Philadelphia.
Navy is led by senior Michael Carbonaro (19-5 at 157) and juniors Thayer Paxton (25-7 at 197) and Nate Gulosh (20-6 at 141). Carbonaro will more than likely wrestle Simpson.
“Their styles are going to be a good match for us,” Burnett said. “If you prepare right, you’ll always have an opportunity to win, and that’s my job: to get them prepared.”
Navy has also gotten a big hand this year from freshman John Cox. Wrestling at 149, Cox has compiled a 16-4 record on the year, and has made a big impression on Burnett.
“He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around,” he said. “With his work ethic, his competitiveness and his tenaciousness, he’s the kind of guy you want in your fox hole.”
Barbee knows it will be a tight battle, and it will come down to whoever can win the close matches – as it usually is between these teams.
"They (Navy) are a good team and a formidable opponent," commented Barbee. "They prepare well, but they are a team we can beat. On paper, there are several matches we are favored in and several where they are the favorites. However, it can go either way."
Which is the way rivalries usually go. Throw the records out the door. It’s Army versus Navy. It may not have the allure and glamour of the football game, but it’s just as big to those involved with the programs.
“It’s a huge rivalry in every sport,” said Barbee. “From football to wrestling to rowing, across the board the intensity is unbelievable.”

Mids Tie Up Franklin & Marshall, 35-6
Annapolis, Md. -- Navy wrestling (11-4) dropped Franklin & Marshall (11-8), 35-6, tonight in Halsey Field House. The Mids claimed nine of the 10 weight classes to secure the victory, and capped the night with sophomore Andrew Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) fighting back from an 8-0 deficit and then pinning his heavyweight opponent.
The night started at 125 pounds with freshman Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin East) scoring a 6-2 decision over Trent Dixon and fellow plebe Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) notching a 5-2 decision over Rich Gebauer at 133 pounds to put the Mids up 6-0.
“Alex and Brad stepped up tonight and beat a couple of good wrestlers,” noted head coach Bruce Burnett. “They got in and got the team going.”
Junior Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) took the mat at 141 pounds and recorded a technical fall over Joe Perratta at 3:40. Gulosh scored three takedowns and a pair of near falls in the first period and earned an escape to start the second period before recording his fourth takedown and a third near fall to push the score to 18-2 and give Navy the five-point win.
At 149 pounds, freshman John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) recorded his second-straight decision in which he held his opponent scoreless. Cox posted a 5-0 victory over the Diplomats' Matt McConnell, as he picked up a two-point near fall to close the second period, a reversal 35 seconds into the third and the point for riding time.
With the Mids leading 14-0, Franklin & Marshall picked up six points as Mike Parziale pinned freshman Chris Rossi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) at the 2:29 mark.
The Mids rebounded quickly, though, with senior Michael Barikian (Stratford, N.J./Sterling Regional) holding Ted Seemuller scoreless for 3:10 as he scored 15 points to put Navy up 19-6. Senior Andrew Hemminger (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) battled with Nate Schy at 174 pounds before eventually securing the 3-2 win. Hemminger took the first lead with an escape point in the second period, but Schy tied the bout at 1-1 to start the third period. With 1:42 left, Hemminger went on top 3-1 with a takedown. Another Schy escape brought him within one, but Hemminger closed out the match to take the 3-2 decision.
At 184 pounds, sophomore Chris Pogue (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) scored a 16-4 major decision over Ben Evans with a quartet of takedowns, two near falls, a reversal and a point for riding time. At 197 pounds, junior Thayer Paxton (Meyersdale, Pa./Berlin Brothers Valley) won an 8-5 decision after surviving a scare in the second period, when RP Norley took advantage of his top starting position and scored a three-point near fall to cut Paxton's lead to 4-3.
Although the Navy win was secured already, Adams fought hard at heavyweight to score a pin and give the Mids a 35-6 victory. Shawn Coughlin took an 8-0 lead with a takedown and two near falls in in the first period, but Adams kept competing and tallied a reversal with 16 seconds remaining. Holding an 8-2 lead, Coughlin chose to start the second period on the bottom but Adams picked up a quick escape point and then scored a takedown and a two-point near fall to cut Coughlin's margin to 9-6 with over one minute to go. Adams added a three-point near fall as the time expired in the second period to tie the bout at 9-9. Adams picked the bottom starting position in the third and quickly scored a reversal before pinning Coughlin at 5:17.
“It was a good win at home,” added Burnett. “We had a lot of different people in the lineup and we haven't been 100%, but it's nice to have people get in and perform when they get their chance. Now, we're looking forward to our big meet next week [against Army].”
The Mids will close out the 2003-04 regular season as they host the Black Knights in Alumni Hall, Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Navy Matches Up Against Franklin & Marshall
|

Freshman John Cox has won 13 of his last 15 matches.
|
Annapolis, Md. -- Navy wrestling (10-4) will play host to Franklin & Marshall (11-7) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Halsey Field House. The Mids are on a hot streak, winning seven of their last eight duals and taking first place at the All-Academy Championship on Jan. 31, while the Diplomats split matches last Saturday, losing to Drexel but defeating Davidson. Navy is currently ranked fourth in the EIWA, although Franklin & Marshall is looking for its best campaign since the team went 11-6 in 1991.
“We're happy to back in Halsey and competing here at home,” noted head coach Bruce Burnett. “Franklin & Marshall has had a good season and we're looking forward to watching our guys compete. We're building towards the end of the season and it will be a good test for us.”
Leading the Mids with 24 wins this season, including 10 victories, is junior Thayer Paxton (Meyersdale, Pa./Berlin Brothers Valley). Paxton pinned all three of his opponents at 197 pounds last Saturday as Navy downed American, North Carolina and Eastern Michigan to earn himself a No. 5 ranking in the conference. Looking for their 20th wins this season will be senior Michael Carbonaro (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) and junior Nate Gulosh (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) at 157 and 141 pounds, respectively. Carbonaro has picked up eight dual wins this season, including a 6-1 decision over North Carolina's Ashton Buswell last week. Gulosh captured the title at the All-Academy Championships with a 5-0 shutout over VMI's David Metzler and is rated fourth in the EIWA standings.
Team captain Michael Barikian (Stratford, N.J./Sterling Regional) owns an 8-2 record in dual meets this season and was tabbed the EIWA's No. 3 wrestler at 165 pounds after a dominating performance at the All-Academy Championships, as he pinned two of his opponents before scoring a 15-4 major decision in the title bout.
Senior Andrew Hemminger (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) has won four of his last five matches and will start at 174 pounds, while Chris Pogue (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) will compete at 184 pounds and Andrew Adams (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) will take the heavyweight spot.
Freshman John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) has won 13 of his last 15 matches at 149 pounds, with his two losses coming against a nationally-ranked opponent and the fourth-ranked wrestler in the conference. Cox earned the No. 5 ranking in the EIWA after picking up two wins last weekend.
Fellow freshmen Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) have earned the starting spots at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Usztics has picked up 13 wins this season, while Canterbury will be looking for his 10th victory of the year.

looking for another
successful weekend.
“We've always had a good
rivalry with North
Carolina,” noted head coach
Bruce Burnett.
“They've got a good program
and we're looking forward to
wrestling them. We haven't
seen American or Eastern
Michigan yet, but they will
give us some important
match-ups. Every time we go
out and compete, it's
another opportunity for us
to get better.”
Expected to start this
weekend are all five of
Navy's All-Academy
individual champions,
Nate Gulosh (Stow,
Ohio/Walsh Jesuit),

Navy Captures 10th Annual
All-Academy Championship
Annapolis, Md. -
Navy wrestling (7-4) captured
the 10th Annual All-Academy Championship today in
Alumni Hall on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy
in front of a crowd of 1,287. The Mids finished the
day with 107 points to take first place for the
first time since 1999. Eight Mids advanced to the
championship round, winning five individual titles
to help the Mids capture their fourth All-Academy
Championship.
“We had to go out and be ready in every match
today,” said head coach Bruce Burnett. “We
won a lot of close matches, and that's what you have
to do to be a good team.”
Freshman John
Cox (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven)
picked up the Mids' second individual title with a
20-8 major decision over Sam Alvarenga (VMI). Cox
held an 11-2 lead before Alvarenga tacked on his
first offensive points, but Cox closed out the bout
with a reversal and a near fall to secure the win.
Cox had a bye in his first round and scored a 6-1
decision over Citadel's Travis Piccard in the
semifinals to advanced to the championship bout.
Meet notes:
149 Semifinals - John Cox
(Navy) wrestling his childhood friend Travis
Piccard (Citadel), no score after first period,
Piccard gets first point on the board with one point
escape, but Cox scores
the first offensive points with a takedown for 2-1
lead. Cox goes up 3-1
in the third with an escape, but with 10 seconds
left in the bout, Cox
adds his third takedown of the match for the 5-1
lead and holds to get riding time and the 6-1 win.
Sam Alvarenga (VMI) after dropping fourth-seeded Dan

Former Bucs help GVSU to second-place finish at National Championship
Finals
Grand Haven graduates Scott Szczepanek, Eric
Gervais and Vince Gervais recently helped the Grand Valley State
University wrestling club to a second-place finish at the National
Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championship Finals on March
12 and 13 in Dallas.

Vince Gervais |
Vince Gervais had the best finish of any
former Buccaneer, winning four straight matches to claim the national
championship at 133 pounds. He scored a 9-4 decision over Adam Harada of
Douglas College to seal the crown.
"Vince just did an outstanding job," said
Laker coach Dave Mills "It was probably one of the most exciting,
enjoyable matches of the evening to watch."
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Szczepanek dropped
his first match in a 5-2 decision before winning six straight matches to
earn third place.
"I thought he just wrestled outstanding and
showed a lot of heart," Mills said.
Eric Gervais also notched a third-place
finish for the Lakers wrestling at 125 pounds.
He scored a pin in 1 minute, 48 seconds of
his first match before being pinned in his second match. Gervais then
reeled off four straight wins by decision to earn third place.
"Eric Gervais made a mistake in the
quarterfinals and got beat by the kid from Central Florida but came back
and took a third," Mills said. "We're very proud of Eric."
Grand Valley finished with 163.5 team
points, just two and a half points behind National Champion University
of Central Florida.
Mills said Grand Valley couldn't have had
its success without the help from the Grand Haven graduates.
"We're very proud of the Grand Haven
wrestlers and very thankful they chose Grand Valley to go to," Mills
said.
"They've really been great leaders and
valued members of our team."
