Instructional Technology

Grand Haven Area Public Schools is a leader in classroom instructional technology. Our district is committed to providing our classrooms access to a network and tools to enhance the education for all students.

Classrooms have access to a wide variety of instructional technology throughout the school day, and the Michigan Educational Technology Standards (METS) are incorporated at every grade level -  delivered through classroom integration and individual course offerings.

Teachers and students are supported by a technology department that provides annual professional development, individual and group trainings, as well as curriculum resource materials and data reporting.  

In 2009, our community passed a $4.9 million technology bond. These funds were used to install a projector, media cart, Promethean interactive whiteboards (ActivBoards), and Promethean classroom response systems (ActiVotes), thus making every classroom in our district an "ActivClassroom".  In 2014 another bond was passed for $18.9 million for technology for the next 10 years.  This bond provides for classroom upgrades and our student 1:1 program. 

Research shows that when students are engaged in their learning with their eyes, their ears and by touching and manipulating the information, they retain the information faster and can recall it longer. Elementary Technology

Our elementary classrooms infuse technology throughout the school day. Every elementary classroom is equipped with a ceiling mounted projector, Promethean interactive whiteboard, classroom response system, audio enhancement sound field system, digital presenter, a teacher workstation, and a multi-media control platform. In addition to the classroom technology, every elementary school is equipped with three mobile laptop labs, and three mobile chromebook labs.   

Our elementary classroom curriculum integrates audio, video, interactive learning opportunities, and digital production.  Beginning in kindergarten through fourth grade, elementary students participate in a media skills class that focuses on raising a student’s skill level in using technology by integrating digital production with a rich media curriculum that focuses on reading appreciation.
 

Middle School Technology

At Lakeshore and White Pines middle school, technology is infused throughout our curriculum. Each middle school classroom is equipped with a digital projector, Promethean interactive whiteboard, classroom response system, audio enhancement sound field system, digital presenter, a teacher workstation, and a multimedia control platform. In addition to classroom technology, the building has access to three mobile laptop labs.  
 

High School Technology

Students at both Grand Haven and Central high schools have many opportunities to use technology throughout the school day. Every classroom is equipped with a digital projector, Promethean interactive whiteboard, classroom response system, digital presenter, a teacher computer and multimedia control platform. GHHS students have access to six mobile laptop labs, while CHS students have access to two mobile laptop labs.

Students at both high schools have access to many technology-rich course offerings including:

  • Architectural Design
  • Business Technology
  • Commercial Art
  • Computer Accountancy
  • Computer Aided Drafting and Design
  • Computer Programming
  • Engineering Design
  • Video Production
  • Web Design

In addition, both Grand Haven and Central high schools house an e2020 credit recovery program in which students utilize online curriculum to accelerate through courses in which they have lost credit. Students are supervised by a certified teacher who can provide individualized help for students who need it.

Grand Haven CyberSchool

Grand Haven is one of the first districts in the area to offer a CyberSchool.  Our cyber is a fully virtual 7-11 th grade (12th grade coming in 2014-15) program.  Grand Haven CyberSchool, started in 2012, provides students with another option to meet their educational needs in a non-traditional way. Students, grades 7-11, take part in a completely online course structure. Local GHAPS staff monitor student progress, as well as look for ways to create meaningful educational opportunities for each CyberSchool student.
