Schools of Choice

Internal Schools of Choice (Elementary Buildings)

Parents of resident students may request that their child attend a school outside their attendance area by downloading and completing the PDF DocumentIntra-District Schools of Choice Application Form and submitting to the Education Service Center (1415 S. Beechtree St., Grand Haven). Applications will be accepted beginning February 1st of the current school through the end of May. Administration will meet and parents will be notified beginning in July. Internal School of Choice requests will be honored based on space and availability in the school requested. If the School of Choice student requests to return to their assigned attendance area, placement will be based upon space and availability. Transportation for Schools of Choice children is the parents’ responsibility.

External Schools of Choice

Grand Haven Area Public Schools offer outstanding instructional and extra-curricular programs and, through Schools of Choice, is pleased to offer these programs to non-resident students. Grand Haven accepts applications of students residing in Ottawa County and residents outside of Ottawa County under Section 105c. Parents can apply by completing and returning the PDF Document Non-Resident Enrollment Application Form to the Education Service Center (1415 Beechtree St., Grand Haven). The application window is from February 1 through the end (Friday) of the first week of school each year. By the end (Friday) of the first week of school each year, parents will be notified in writing of their non-resident students’ acceptance, school building and teacher assignment, and the procedures for enrollment. Parents must complete the enrollment process by the end of the first week of school.  Applications are also accepted from January 4 through the end of the 3rd week of January each year for students wishing to transfer to GHAPS at the semester break.

Important considerations for parents and students applying for Schools of Choice

  1. Transportation is not provided for Schools of Choice enrollees. Parents must provide their own transportation to and from school for children accepted for enrollment.
  2. Applications may be denied if a student has been suspended from another school district within the preceding 2 years, expelled from another school district at any time before enrolling, or convicted of a felony at any time before enrolling.
  3. All rules of the Michigan H.S.A.A. apply to all transfer students.
