Dear Peach Plains Families,

Welcome to first grade… almost! As your child’s future teachers, we want to help your family make the transition from Kindergarten to First Grade a smooth one.

Reading is a major component of our First Grade curriculum.  There are many reading concepts that new first graders are encouraged to have as they begin the year.  It’s important your child have alphabet letter recognition (upper/lower case), know respective letter sounds, and be able to read high frequency words.  High frequency words include:

is
am
I
little
in
up
he
my
are
can
come
it
see
she
the
they
go
me
like

Writing goes hand-in-hand with reading.  Please encourage your child to practice writing their name with an uppercase letter followed by lower case letters.  Also, encourage your child to write in a summer writing journal.  Making lists, writing names, labeling pictures…all this will help your child with 1st grade expectations.

With regard to math, our Math Expressions program begins with the expectation that beginning First Graders are able to write, recognize, and recite numbers 0-100.  Students should be able to skip count by 5s/10s to 100 and by 2s to 20.

First Grade is a time of social learning too.  Non-academic skills such as sharing and cooperation are expected.  Students should know the difference between left and right, be able to tie their shoes, zip/button jackets, blow their nose, and exhibit good handwashing/bathroom techniques.  Continual practice of address/phone number is helpful.

First Grade is a time of wonderful new discovery. Your child will be off to a positive start if the above-mentioned concepts are reviewed throughout the summer. We are looking forward to meeting your child! We also value you and hope to engage you as partners in learning.  Please help your child for an amazing start.

Sincerely,
First Grade Teachers
