Academics

At Grand Haven Area Public Schools, we are committed to helping every student achieve success. Our classrooms encourage students to develop as thinkers, collaborators, and creative problem solvers. Building on this strong foundation, our award-winning schools consistently prepare GHAPS students to perform above county and state averages.

Along with a solid core curriculum in math, reading, science, and social studies, students have the chance to explore a wide range of learning opportunities. From art, music, and world languages to hands-on technology, we make sure every child receives a well-rounded education that prepares them for the future.

State-Mandated Assessments

Elementary and middle school M-STEP assessments are administered in the Spring of each school year in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, in English Language Arts, math, science, and social studies.

In the 11th grade, high school students take the Michigan Merit Exam (MME). The MME is the high school counterpart of the M-STEP at the elementary and middle school levels. It is made up of the SAT, WorkKeys (Reading, Math, and Locating Information), and Michigan components.

District-Elected Assessments

Grand Haven Area Public Schools assesses students’ reading and math abilities using
grade-level common assessments in grades K-8. These assessments provide data on
whether students have mastered the state standards being taught in our classrooms.
Building principals and teachers use the data to determine if students need additional
assistance to learn the skills. If so, interventions and re-teaching are provided to the
students.

These assessments also provide the district and buildings with data to inform staff on which students will be ready for the M-STEP test.
