Kindergarten & Young Fives
Kindergarten & Young Fives Screenings: June 16 & 17, 2026
Families who have completed enrollment for kindergarten or Young Fives are encouraged to contact their child's school office to schedule a Kindergarten & Young Fives Screening appointment on June 16 or 17.
These screenings provide an opportunity for our staff to get to know each incoming student and help ensure a smooth transition into school. The information gathered during the screening also helps families and staff determine whether kindergarten or Young Fives may be the best fit for a child’s first year of school.
What to Expect
Screenings typically take 15–20 minutes and include a variety of age-appropriate activities that help our educators learn more about each child's social and behavioral readiness, communication skills, fine and gross motor development, and early academic skills. There is no passing or failing. The experience is designed to be relaxed, welcoming, and child-friendly.
Before Your Appointment
- Complete your child's enrollment if you have not already done so.
- Contact your child's school office to schedule a screening appointment on June 16 or 17.
- Help your child feel comfortable by letting them know they will be meeting with a teacher who is excited to get to know them.
Health Screenings
Before starting school in the fall, students must complete required health and dental screenings. The Ottawa County Department of Public Health will be available to provide hearing, vision, and dental screenings. Additional information about these services will be shared with families as it becomes available.

Young Fives or Kindergarten?
GHAPS offers two excellent options for students beginning their educational journey.
Young Fives provides an additional year focused on play-based learning, social-emotional development, and school-readiness skills while still building foundational literacy and math skills.
Kindergarten is available at each GHAPS elementary school and generally moves at a faster pace with a greater emphasis on academic instruction while continuing to support the development of the whole child.
