GHAPS Vision of Learning
At Grand Haven Area Public Schools, we help students build a strong academic foundation and the skills they need to succeed in school and life. Our GHAPS Vision of Learning includes six Learner Traits that students practice through everyday learning, from kindergarten through graduation. Together, these traits help students gain more than knowledge, preparing them to use what they learn, work with others, and face new challenges with confidence.

Learner Trait Success Criteria
Our Success Criteria help students, families, and staff understand what each Learner Trait looks like in action at different grade levels. These clear, student-friendly statements guide instruction and learning, help students set goals, and encourage them to reflect on their growth. They are used to support students, not to score or grade them.

Why We Created a Shared Vision
We wanted a clear, shared understanding of what we are helping every GHAPS student achieve, both academically and beyond the classroom. Our Vision of Learning gives teachers, students, and families a common set of goals, while the Learner Traits name the skills we want students to build along the way. Together, they guide how we design learning experiences and support students as they grow from kindergarten through graduation.
How We Developed Our Vision
We began with a shared question: What do we want to be true about a Grand Haven learner? We gathered input from teachers, parents, community members, and local employers about the knowledge and skills students need to succeed. Their input helped shape our Vision of Learning and its six Learner Traits.
Bringing the Traits to Life
From kindergarten through graduation, teachers will build the Learner Traits into everyday lessons, discussions, and projects. Students will learn to recognize when they are using each trait, practice it in meaningful ways, and reflect on their growth. Shared Success Criteria will help students understand what each trait looks like in action and how they can continue to improve.
