Michigan's Secure Firearm Storage Law
Michigan's firearm secure storage law went into effect on February 13, 2024, to help protect children and reduce firearm-related injuries. The law requires firearm owners to securely store firearms whenever minors (under age 18) are present or likely to be present.
Michigan schools are required to share this information with parents and guardians to help families understand the law and promote safe firearm storage.
Safe Storage Requirements
Under Michigan law (MCL 28.429), if a firearm is left unattended where a minor is or is likely to be present, it must be:
Secured in a locked box or container designed for firearm storage.
Unloaded and secured with a locking device, such as a trigger or cable lock, that prevents the firearm from being used.
These requirements apply to all firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns, whether they are kept at home, in a vehicle, or at another location.
Simply hiding a firearm or placing it out of reach does not meet Michigan's secure storage requirements.
Free and Low-Cost Firearm Locks
Free or low-cost firearm locks and storage devices may be available through local law enforcement agencies, health departments, and community organizations.
Project ChildSafe also provides free firearm safety kits, including cable locks, through participating agencies.
