After teaching and coaching in the district since 1965 and serving for 18 years on the Board of Education, Board Trustee Carl Treutler announced his intent to resign during the December 2025 School Board Meeting and officially tendered his resignation on January 1, 2026.

Following his resignation, the Grand Haven Area Public Schools (GHAPS) Board of Education is inviting community members to apply for the vacant Board position. Serving on the Board of Education is an opportunity to play an important role in shaping the future of Grand Haven Area Public Schools and supporting student success across the district.

The Personnel Committee will review all applications and select the finalists on Tuesday, January 20, at 12:00 PM, at the Education Service Center. Finalists will be interviewed at a Special Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 27, beginning at 6:00 PM, at the Education Service Center. The meetings will be conducted in accordance with the Michigan Open Meetings Act.

This Board seat will be on the ballot in November 2026. 
The individual appointed by the Board will serve from late January through late November 2026.

To be eligible for appointment, applicants must:

  • Be a registered voter in the school district
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a resident of the State of Michigan for at least 30 days and a resident of the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district
