Public Comment

Public Comment During Board Meetings

The Board invites members of the audience to share questions or comments during the time designated for audience participation on the agenda during each meeting. Comments may be related to an agenda item or to other areas of interest pertaining to the Board’s work.

Please remember the following guidelines when participating in public comment:

  • Comments should pertain to the Board’s business.
  • The Board does not take action on comments or questions made during the public comment. The comments may be referred to the Superintendent for response, research, and/or recommendation.
  • The Board asks that all speakers use the microphone and identify themselves before speaking.
  • Remarks will be limited to three (3) minutes.
  • The Board asks that affiliated or organized groups of five or more designate a spokesperson to give their comment.

The district’s full policy governing this public comment period (Policy 2504) is available on the BoardBook policy page.

Attendees must register their intention to participate in the public comment portion of the meeting, which can be done in person or by completing an online form before the start of each meeting.

When to Contact the Board of Education

The Grand Haven Area Public Schools Board of Education serves as the district’s governing body, responsible for setting policy, approving budgets, and providing oversight of the superintendent.

Because the Board does not manage daily school operations or individual student matters, most questions or concerns are best addressed by school or district staff first through the Chain of Communication.

Families may consider contacting the Board of Education when:

  • A concern has been addressed through the full communication chain and remains unresolved

  • Feedback is related to district-wide policy, governance, or long-term planning

  • Sharing general input during public comment at a Board meeting

The Board works through the superintendent to ensure concerns are reviewed appropriately and consistently across the district.

For operational or school-level concerns, families are encouraged to follow the Grand Haven Area Public Schools Chain of Communication outlined in the Communication & Support Protocol.
