GHHS Students Pay It Forward
Join the Elf Express Relay to Support the People Center
The Pay-it-Forward class at Grand Haven High School has organized a festive relay race to raise awareness for the People Center in Spring Lake!
Grand Haven High School's 'Pay It Forward' class, taught by Brian Williams, offers students a chance to broaden their perspectives and build empathy by learning about others' lived experiences right here in the Grand Haven community. After spending the first part of the semester learning about needs in our community and researching ways to help solve them, students take action. Split into groups of seven or eight, students put their heads together and partner with local organizations to plan initiatives that support their selected cause. For some groups, it may involve fundraising efforts to support local groups supporting the cause; for others, it may be organizing events to raise awareness.
This semester, one group is working to support Spring Lake's People Center, which provides food, clothing, transitional housing, and access to other resources for individuals and families in the area. The group planned a holiday-themed Elf Express Relay Race that will be held at Grand Haven High School on Saturday, December 21, at 5 PM to build awareness and collect donations for the People Center. The event will feature a holiday-themed relay race with fun obstacles to complete, such as a reindeer antler ring toss, hopping across in "Santa's present sack," and more. Participants are asked to RSVP by filling out a Google Form and to bring items to donate as their entrance fee, such as clothing, blankets, toys, or canned goods. The group encourages families and individuals of all ages to attend, whether they plan to run, walk, or drop off donation items to support the People Center. And what's a relay race without a prize? The winning team will receive a gift basket assembled by the student group.
