During this week's Board of Education meeting, Board members recognized Ferry Elementary STEM teacher Andrew Ratke for being named a recipient of the 2026 American Legion Teacher of the Year Award from the American Legion Department of Michigan.

The statewide award recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching, meaningful community involvement, and a commitment to helping students become engaged and responsible citizens. Only five educators from across Michigan were selected for this year's honor.

In addition to teaching STEM at Ferry Elementary, Ratke coordinates the district's Homegrown program, which connects students with local businesses, organizations, and community partners through hands-on, project-based learning experiences. Through this work, students gain real-world learning opportunities while developing creativity, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of their community.

The Board congratulated Ratke on this well-deserved recognition and thanked him for the positive impact he continues to make on students throughout GHAPS.
