Toddlers and their families are discovering the joy of reading through a special monthly story time held in the library at Grand Haven Area Public Schools' Duneside Discovery Center, thanks to an ongoing partnership with Loutit District Library.

Held on the first Friday of each month, the event welcomes toddlers and their caregivers for a morning of stories, music, movement, and fun. Many of the children have older siblings who already attend Duneside, making the program a great opportunity for younger family members to begin building connections with the school community before they are old enough to enroll.

Led in partnership with Loutit District Library, each gathering features engaging stories along with interactive activities like singing, dancing, bubble popping, and more. The combination of reading and play helps children develop early language and listening skills, build connections with others, and experience the joy of learning together.

While the children are busy having fun, the activities also help lay an important foundation for future learning. Hearing stories read aloud, participating in songs, and interacting with books can help build vocabulary, strengthen communication skills, and encourage curiosity from an early age.

Building Connections Before the First Day of School

Beyond encouraging a lifelong love of reading, the monthly story time is one of the ways Duneside serves as a welcoming place for young children and families throughout the community.

For families with children who have not yet started school, opportunities like these offer a chance to become familiar with Duneside, connect with other families, and begin building positive relationships with the school community. They also help introduce parents and caregivers to the learning experiences and supportive environment available through GHAPS' early childhood programs.

The program is another example of how partnerships between GHAPS and local organizations help create meaningful opportunities for children and families. By bringing the resources and expertise of Loutit District Library together with Duneside's early childhood environment, the partnership supports early literacy while helping families feel connected to their local schools.

And with plenty of stories, songs, dancing, and bubbles, it's clear that learning can be a lot of fun, even before the first day of school!
