The Grand Haven Area Public Schools Board of Education recently recognized the Grand Haven High School Varsity Boys Volleyball team, Head Coach Jim VanTol, and the coaching staff following a historic state championship season.

The Buccaneers finished the year with an outstanding 35-1 record and captured the MHSAA Division 1 Boys Volleyball State Championship earlier this month at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The team advanced through a highly competitive state tournament with dominant performances, including straight-set victories in both the quarterfinals and semifinals before securing the state title.

This championship holds a unique place in Michigan high school sports history. The 2026 season marked the first year boys volleyball was sanctioned by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and featured an official state championship tournament. As a result, Grand Haven will forever be recognized as the inaugural Division 1 Boys Volleyball State Champion.

Board members congratulated the players, coaches, families, and supporters who helped make this remarkable achievement possible and thanked them for representing Grand Haven with excellence throughout the season.
