Nearly 30 community members joined the Grand Haven Area Public Schools Innovation Task Force at Central Park Place this week to share their experiences, perspectives, and ideas about the future of education.

Through a series of interviews, task force members asked participants to reflect on their most memorable school experiences, what made those experiences meaningful, and what they believe Grand Haven schools could and should look like in the future.

The conversations offered an opportunity to hear directly from community members about what matters most in education, while encouraging task force members to think creatively about new possibilities for GHAPS students.

The interviews were part of a larger process known as design thinking, which emphasizes listening to people's experiences, understanding their needs, and exploring ideas before developing potential solutions.

Following the interviews, task force members came together to reflect on their conversations and discuss the perspectives and ideas shared by participants.

Exploring What's Possible for GHAPS Students

Launched at the beginning of the 2026-27 school year, the GHAPS Innovation Task Force brings together approximately 40 educators from across the district to explore new approaches to teaching and learning.

The group's work supports the district's Strategic Plan, particularly its focus on Rigorous, Relevant, and Engaging Learning, and centers on one driving question:

How can we innovate teaching and learning so that the student experience is relevant and engaging?

Task force members are exploring innovative school models, instructional practices, emerging technologies, and approaches to school culture. Their work also connects to GHAPS' Vision for Learning, which emphasizes six learner traits: collaboration, critical thinking, empathy, resilience, communication, and curiosity.

The goal is not to introduce change simply for the sake of change, but to build on what GHAPS already does well while exploring opportunities to make learning even more meaningful, engaging, and connected to students' lives.

Listening and Learning Together

An important part of the Innovation Task Force's work is gathering perspectives from the people who experience and support education every day.

Community conversations, like those held at Central Park Place, provide valuable opportunities to consider different experiences and ideas. Task force members are also encouraged to engage with students and colleagues, share what they are learning, and explore new approaches in their own classrooms.

Rather than working toward a predetermined model or solution, the task force is focused on asking questions, challenging assumptions, and building a shared understanding of what innovative learning could look like across GHAPS.

This week's conversations were an important part of that work, bringing community voices into the discussion about how GHAPS can continue creating meaningful learning experiences for students.

Thank you to the community members who took time to share their experiences and ideas, and to Andrew Ratke for his instrumental role in organizing this opportunity.
