Grand Haven High School senior Mallory Verhougstraete has earned national recognition for her academic achievement, joining a select group of students named Semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Semifinalists are among the highest-scoring students in their states on the PSAT/NMSQT and represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. Mallory now has the opportunity to advance to Finalist standing and compete for National Merit Scholarships awarded next spring.

But there’s much more to Mallory than a test score. We caught up with her to talk about her years at GHAPS, favorite books and classes, plans after high school, and what keeps her busy outside the classroom.

Which GHAPS schools have you attended?

Mallory started in Young Fives at Lake Hills Elementary and attended there through fourth grade before moving on to White Pines Intermediate School, Lakeshore Middle School, and now Grand Haven High School.

What are your plans after high school?

Mallory plans to attend college and is keeping her options open as she considers where she might go and what she might study. She’s particularly interested in the sciences, especially chemistry and biology, and is considering colleges both in Michigan and out of state.

What class are you enjoying most this year?

AP Literature.

“I really like reading, especially classic books,” Mallory said. “It’s just a really great opportunity for me to learn more about how to analyze books more deeply and see what the authors are writing and why.”

Since you’re a reader, what’s on your favorites list?

Mallory named The Great Gatsby and The Perks of Being a Wallflower among her favorites, along with the works of Charles Dickens, including A Tale of Two Cities.

Who has made an impact on you during your time at GHAPS?

Mallory pointed to GHHS science teacher Mr. Newman, whom she had for both Honors Chemistry and AP Chemistry. He has also coached her in Science Olympiad for several years.

“He’s just really supportive,” Mallory said. “He’s a really good teacher.”

What keeps you busy outside the classroom?

Mallory participates in cross country and Science Olympiad. She also works as a veterinary assistant at Lake Michigan Animal Hospital in Allendale.

And while veterinary medicine is one possibility, Mallory is keeping her options open as she explores where her interest in science might take her.

For now, Mallory has plenty of senior year still ahead of her, along with the next steps in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Congratulations, Mallory, on this outstanding recognition!
