Dear GHAPS Families,
Earlier this year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a law requiring public schools to prohibit students from using wireless communication devices during instructional time. The law applies to all grade levels beginning with the upcoming 2026–27 school year.
Over the past several months, the GHAPS Board of Education has considered how to meet the new legal requirements while also supporting student learning and success. The Board reviewed a first reading of a proposed policy in July and is expected to vote on it during their August 17, 2026 meeting.
Pending approval, the new GHAPS board policy will prohibit all GHAPS students from using cell phones and other wireless communication devices during the school day. Each school’s student handbook will explain how and where students must store devices that are brought to school.
In addition to cell phones, the state’s definition of wireless communication devices also includes smartwatches, tablets, and other personal devices that can be used for communication, entertainment, or internet access. District-owned devices used to support learning are not prohibited. Exceptions will also be provided for medical needs, special education services and accommodations, approved classroom activities, and certain emergency situations.
We understand that these changes may take some getting used to for students and families. Our schools will work closely with students and families to clearly explain the expectations and support a smooth transition. Each GHAPS building is updating its student handbook and will provide more information about where devices should be kept and how the policy will be enforced.
